The Husqvarna Automower 220 AC Review: Does it Live Up to the Promises?

Last updated: September 17, 2024 by Patrick Sinclair Leave a Comment

The Husqvarna Automower 220 AC is a low-noise robotic lawnmower that produces only 60 decibels of sound, letting you sleep in the yard while waiting for it to finish its task.  It delivers great results, leaving you with the perfect lawn every single time.

The Husqvarna Automower allows you to mow your lawn without you leaving your living room.  You can program it using the onboard keypad that is easy to use.  Direct commands also work if you want to have an extra perfect yard.

You can set your preferences and schedule the lawn mowing using the 19-button touchpad that comes with an LCD screen.  You can set it to cut the grass with a range of 0.8 inches to 2.4 inches just by turning the large knob you find on the top of the lawnmower.

The cutting width is 8.7 inches, which is perfect for small lawns and trickier areas.  And since everything is automated, you do not have to worry that its narrow cutting width is going to take up too much of your time!

The Automower 220 AC is great for level yards that have very slight differences in terrain.  It comes with a maximum incline of 20 degrees. However, what really set it apart are the special blades.

The razor-sharp blades cut the grass from all directions, giving you stronger growing grass and making your lawn look like it is blanketed by a lush green carpet.

Moss will also have a hard time growing on your lawn.  There are three carbon steel razor blades here that are enclosed in a cutting disc, and that helps cut the grass perfectly, making your lawn healthier.

Safety mechanisms

The Husqvarna Automower 220 AC is equipped with several sensors that detect when it is lifted, tilted or if it encounters an obstacle.  These sensors would shut the motor down completely, ensuring that nobody is wounded or injured in case a child or somebody else tries to lift the Automower.

In the event that it tips over, you would not have to worry about it still running.  In other instances, these same sensors would redirect the Automower to avoid obstacles.

Also, the Automower is designed in such a way that the blades are rotating away from the outer edge, so there is no danger in getting injured when it comes across a child’s foot and other obstacles.

You also have the PIN code lock.  Kids and other unauthorized people would not be able turn it on without keying your pin first.  It also has an anti-theft alarm on board.

Other features

  • Automatic charging. You really do not have to wait for the Automower to run out of power and then charge it manually.  When it is low on battery, it will go back to its charging station and recharge by itself.  You can set up guide wires to help your Automower find its way back to the charging station, lessening the amount of time it needs to search for it.
  • Great traction. The Automower has outstanding traction, helping it work even when it is on a steep incline or slippery surfaces.  It can easily navigate through slopes of up to 35 degrees.
  • All weather. You can leave the Automower to do its work, rain or shine.  The manufacturer claims that it can easily withstand harsh weather conditions, like the ones you see in Nordic countries.  Unlike other robotic mowers with a rain sensor, the Automower does not need to stop if there is a downpour or if the humidity is high.
  • Environmentally-friendly and no emissions. Did you know that according to the EPA, the traditional lawnmower produces harmful compounds and emits nitrogen oxides that are equal to driving 11 new cars in an hour?  It is said that lawn mowers typically release 25% to 30% of their unburned gas and oil into the air.  Well, worry no more as the Automower uses electricity to power its blades, helping you get a great-looking lawn without destroying the environment!

The Husqvarna Automower 220 AC Cheat Sheet

Downsides

The Husqvarna Automower 220 AC makes use of a nickel metal hydride battery that runs out of charge after just 45 minutes of use.  That means that if you have a lawn bigger than a half an acre, you would need to wait for it to recharge for another 45 minutes and do a second or third run on your lawns.

At least, however, you do not have to wait that long for a full recharge.  That could have easily been avoided with a lithium-ion battery that has a longer charge.

What’s more, compared to a lithium-ion battery which lasts for three to five years, NiMH batteries also have shorter life spans, and you would probably need to change it every two or three years.

While they keypad is very easy to use, there is no other way to program your Automower other than the onboard panel.  You cannot connect it to your Wi-Fi network nor do you have a mobile app that can help you program it remotely.

Also, if you have a yard that is not level or has different zones that are separated by dividers or pavement, the Automower does not have multi-zone features that allow it to mow different areas automatically.

Alternatives to the Husqvarna Automower 220 AC that You Should Consider

The Husqvarna Automower 220 AC is one of the top robotic lawnmowers available in the market today – a distinction it shares with Bosch Indego and RoboMow RS622.

If you are looking for the lowest price, then you can get the Bosch Indego.  However, you might have to contend with the noise and the fact that it covers only a small portion of your lawn, only up to 0.25 acres.

The Husqvarna Automower is the most silent of the three brands mentioned, and it is also the lightest at 19.8 pounds, with the narrowest cutting width: 8.7 inches.  This makes it very convenient for those who have lawns that have tricky areas that other mowers might have problems with.

The RoboMow RS622, on the other hand, sells for around $600 cheaper than the Automower and has more flexibility in the cutting height, with a maximum of 3.2 inches, compared to only 2.4 inches for the Indego and the Automower.  It also has  a rain sensor and remote control is possible using a smartphone app.

Further, it has a cutting width of 22 inches, making it ideal for really big lawns. It can also cover half an acre of your lawn in a single charge, which is good for from 50 minutes to 65 minutes of uninterrupted operation. The RoboMow RS622, however, takes longer to charge.

It needs anywhere from 90 minutes to 135 minutes to recharge.  That means that you get less mowing time from a RoboMow RS622, compared to the Husqvarna Automower.

Final Verdict

If you have a level lawn and you need a quick lawn mower that is very easy to operate, then the Husqvarna Automower 220 AC is perfect for you.  It may not have all the bells and whistles that you find in other robotic lawn mowers, but it covers the basics really well.

It also helps you save time and gives you more mowing coverage because a single charge can do 45 minutes of mowing and a recharge would only take just about the same time.  And if you have sensitive neighbors, you would love the fact that the Automower is practically noiseless.

Additionally, the Automover’s unique blades really help the grass become healthier and not just keep it neatly trimmed.  This lawn mower does not just chop grass off like other comparable lawn mowers.

However, there are several things that should be improved, such as its high price and the ability to control and schedule it remotely.  Nevertheless, it is a great robotic lawnmower that really delivers.
